Para diseñar esta aeronave se basaron en el F/A-18 Hornet original, pero creando un avión mucho más grande y avanzado, aunque ha sido criticado por no mantener las prestaciones de maniobrabilidad de su antecesor. El Super Hornet entró en servicio con la Armada de los Estados Unidos en el año 1999 fabricándose más de 610 unidades , inicialmente por McDonnell Douglas y todavía esta en producción, ahora por el fabricante Boeing.
