In this video I explore the burial experience of ordinary people from Medieval and Early Modern Britain, looking particularly at how churchyards were managed and how exhumation was a standard part of mortuary practice in this period.  Churchyards were constantly reused and often the bones of the dead were placed reverently in Charnel houses, bone repositories where they would be seen and reflected on by the living.
