How to Install the Knob / Rod / Shaft Assembly into a GM-type Headlight Switch.

There are some common issues with the installation of GM-type headlight switches. Namely, the knob & shaft either won't lock into the switch OR that the knob & shaft won't release from (remove from) the switch. Both of these situations are common and related.

When you insert the knob & shaft all the way into the headlight switch, the shaft should lock-in so that it won't pull all the way out when turning on your parking lights or headlights, and you should be able to release the knob & shaft easily just by pressing the spring-loaded release button on the bottom of the switch.

However, if you are having a problem with shaft not locking OR the shaft not releasing from the switch, we'll go over what is actually going on INSIDE the switch.

But first, let's look at the knob & shaft itself.  The shaft is triangular, not circular.  It is triangular so that you are able to engage and rotate the drive sleeve or collar that engages the light intensity rheostat.

There is also a groove cut into the shaft.  This groove is the part that should lock into the switch's Latch Plate to prevent the knob & shaft from pulling all the way out when you turn on your lights.

The end of the shaft is also pointed.  This is so that the shaft can more easily slide into the small hole in the switch's Latch Plate.

WHY DOESN'T THE KNOB & SHAFT LOCK INTO THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH?
The most common issue is that the shaft is mis-aligned with the latch plate.

With all of the switch's components removed except for the base plate and latch plate, in the video you will see what's occurring inside the switch.

The goal is to get the shaft through the oblong opening in the latch plate.  To do this, and to prevent the edges of the triangular shaft from snagging on the hole in the latch plate, while pushing the knob & shaft inward, rotate the knob & shaft and/or pivot it up & down. At that point, the spring loaded-latch plate should slide into the groove in the shaft, locking it in.

WHY DOESN'T THE KNOB & SHAFT RELEASE FROM THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH?
Again, the most common issue is that the shaft is mis-aligned with the latch plate.

To release the knob & shaft, pull or push the knob to the center or parking light position, depress the spring-loaded button on the bottom of the switch, then, while pulling outward, rotate the knob & shaft and/or pivot it up & down. This will set it free from the hole in the latch plate.

With this particular switch, you must set the knob & shaft in the parking light position, in other words, press the shaft all the way in, then pull out (1) click. If the shaft is not in the parking light position, the spring-loaded release button will either not be able to be pushed in or will push in very easily because it's not engaging, or missing, the latch plate.

While pushing in the spring-loaded release button on the bottom of the switch, gently pull while rotating the shaft.  Rotating the shaft will make it easier for the shaft to pull out of the hole in the latch plate.
