Step by step tutorial on how to knit the backward loop increase (M1BL).

Make one with the backloop is a very easy and versatile knitting increase suitable for beginners. It creates a left-slanting increase and can be used n the middle of a project or at the edge of a row to cast on new stitches.
It's simply creating a loop around your thumb and picking it up with your needle. You may create a little gap if you don't keep a nice tension, though.
There is also a right-slanted variation where you wrap the yarn around your thumb counter-clockwise and pick the yarn from above/behind.
