What is Lou Gehrig's Disease?

Lou Gehrig's Disease is a commonly used name for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, a progressive motor neuron disease that damages nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Muscle weakness and atrophy result.

It's called Lou Gehrig's disease because of publicity it received when Hall of Fame New York Yankees player Lou Gehrig contracted it in the late 1930's. Gehrig died from ALS in 1941, and a movie about his life starring Gary Cooper brought even more public attention to ALS several years later.

Approximately 5,600 people in the U.S.are diagnosed with ALS each year. It is believed that about 30,000 Americans may have it at any given time. ALS often occurs spontaneously and mysteriously, and frequently strikes previously healthy adults. Researchers and scientists do not yet completely understand the cause.

ALS develops most often in people between the ages of 40 and 70, with age 55 being the average. But it has occurred in individuals in their 20s and 30s too. It is 20 percent more common in middle-aged men than women, but percentages between men and women tend to become more consistent with increasing age.

Early symptoms of ALS include the following:

* Muscles stiffness

* Muscle weakness in arms and legs

* Muscle cramps

* Twitching

* Problems chewing and/or swallowing

* Slurred and nasal speech

Race and ethnicity do not appear to be factors in causing ALS. It is not contagious, and it can strike anyone anywhere in the world.
