Creative Writing Exercises:
1. Use the “random articles” link on the Wikipedia homepage and write about whatever topic comes up. I usually time myself for 10-15 minutes.
2. Re-write an important scene from a novel from a different character’s point of view. How did they perceive the events of this scene? What were they feeling and thinking?
3. Take two written pieces (articles, essays, children’s stories, etc.) and create a “found poem” by cutting interesting lines from each work and combining them on a sheet of paper.
4. Imagine yourself in an interesting location (abandoned house, Hollywood mansion, cabin in the woods, etc.) and describe the scene using all five senses. Limit your use of adjectives (creepy, beautiful, peaceful). Focus more on describing exactly what you see, smell, hear, taste, and feel to develop the atmosphere of the scene.
5. Have some give you three numbers (or randomly select three numbers). The first number will tell you which book on your bookshelf to select. The next number is the page to turn to. The final number is the sentence on that page. Use that sentence to start out a timed writing session.
