Watch this short video to differentiate between the primary and secondary markets. Know the activities conducted on both markets through this quick, enjoyable video.
The primary market is where stocks are sold for the first time or to select buyers. IPO, or Initial Public Offering happens here. In fact, IPO is called a primary market. New bonds are similarly introduced first on the primary market. Rights offering (that allows companies who have previously done an IPO to put additional shares on the market) is also conducted in the primary market.
In Private placement the company directly sells shares to a hedge fund or bank, this too happens in the Primary Market.
If a company wants to give shares to a bank, hedge fund or mutual fund at a special price even this happens in a Primary market.
As you may have noticed from the points, in a primary market shares are bought by the trader directly from the issuing company.
The secondary market is what we call the stock market where traders buy and sell shares from each other via a stock broker.
