IMPORTANCE OF SELF-REGULATION:

- Children must learn to sense the world through what they see, hear, touch, taste and smell. They then use this information to regulate their thoughts, emotions and behaviours.

- Infants respond to rocking, a soothing touch or soft voice to help them to remain in a calm state.

- A child may demonstrate sensory preferences that help to remain regulated. A child may show a preference for music, tight squeezes, being rocked or bounced which helps to regulate behaviour.

- A child may also avoid certain sensory experiences such as loud noises or different textures for touch or food.

- Improved learning and behaviour requires self-regulation skills.  Children need to learn to control their thinking, emotions and behaviour.

- The foundational skills for self-regulation are learned in the first five years of life.
