After the Nazis and their French collaborators began deporting Jews from Paris, Albert Garih’s parents placed their young son in hiding to protect him from constant uncertainty and danger. First, Albert and his sisters hid in plain sight on a farm in the French countryside. But when Albert accidentally revealed they were Jewish, they had to move back to Paris. Later, strangers from the market took in Albert, his mother, and his sisters—until a neighbor threatened to denounce them.
