Dylann Roof walked into Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church in Charleston, South Carolina, on June 17, 2015 and killed nine members of the black congregation attending a Bible study inside. Shortly after, he was arrested he gave a remarkable, absurd, sad and blunt interrogation and confession to police. This the full interview. This video of his interview by the FBI helps us understand why the U.S. government pursued federal hate crimes charges alongside state murder charges. He speaks openly and frankly about his views and motivation.
On Dec. 15, 2016, a federal jury convicted Roof on all 33 counts. He faces either the death penalty or life in prison.
