Do You Really Need a Lapidary Saw?

When the question is always asked "what should my first lapidary equipment be?" the answer is almost always "buy a saw". Don't get me wrong, I love having saws for cutting rocks, but maybe for some people out there you can start with a flat lap and some lower grit discs.
