Learning English Podcast - Largest Camera, Children Lack Food, South Korean Space Agency

Ashley Thompson and Dan Novak are the hosts of the Learning English podcast for Monday, Jun. 10, 2024. Ashley starts the program with a report on the largest digital camera ever built for scientists. The camera can produce images above 3.2 gigapixels in size and weighs nearly three tons. It will be installed on the top of a mountain called Cerro Pachón in the Coquimbo area of Chile. Dan follows with a UNICEF report saying that 181 million children younger than 5 live in severe food poverty. That is more than one-fourth of the world’s youngest children. Africa’s more than 1.3 billion people are among the most affected populations. In several Nigerian communities, UNICEF is training women to increase their families’ nutrient intake with cassava, sweet potato, maize and vegetables grown in gardens at home. The agency is also helping train them in raising livestock and chickens. For Science and Technology, Bryan Lynn reports on the South Korean space effort. Recently, President Yoon Suk Yeol announced the establishment of the Korea Aerospace Administration (KASA) and plans to spend about $70 billion on future space exploration. South Korea plans at least three space launches for the next three years. It also aims to launch a moon landing in 2032. Ashley joins Bryan to discuss the reasons behind the establishment of KASA and what to look for in the future.
