Ventricular tachycardia is an abnormal heart rhythm that originates from the ventricles. The electrical conduction system is sending out an abnormal electrical signal that causes the ventricles to contract rapidly.

As a result, the ventricles cannot pump blood efficiently, which can decrease cardiac output. This rhythm can occur for a short duration (such as premature ventricular contractions of 3 or more), or it can be sustained.

One important thing to remember is that ventricular tachycardia (V-tach) can have different presentations: monomorphic ventricular tachycardia and polymorphic ventricular tachycardia. One type of polymorphic v-tach is known as torsades de pointes.

It is important to recognize and understand the different types, because the treatment can vary for each type.
