Gwanghwamun Square has a fascinating, ancient history, and that's what makes it one of the top places to visit in Seoul. In 1392, King Taejo founded a country called Joseon, transferred his capital to Hanyang (later called Seoul), and there, he built his palace, Gyeongbok gung. Construction was completed three years later. The southern and main gate was called Sajeongmum and was later renamed, Gwanghwamun .

Gwanghwamun opened onto the Yukjo Geori which housed Royal administration buildings. For centuries, Gwanghwamun Gwang Jang or square had been a public road, and by the 20th century,  it was a 16 lane road way. It became infamous as the location with the worst traffic congestion.

Reconstruction of the Plaza was scheduled to begin in February 2008, and it was part of Seoul city plans to introduce environmentally friendly renovation projects (Other projects included the Cheonggyecheon and the Seoul Plaza). However, construction was delayed due to opposition from the National police agency who worried that the Plaza would be utilised for illegal protests. It was only when the government announced that the square would be a ‘demonstration free’ zone that construction started.

The renovation (completed by August 2009) took about 15 months. It reduced the roads from 16 lanes to 10, cost about 44.5 billion won.  Two months later, a 20 ton bronze statue of King Sejong arrived, and it was placed 250 meters behind admiral Yi Sun Sin.

Today the Plaza is used for many different fun activities including the starting location for the Seoul International Marathon, Viewing the FIFA World Cup with other football fans, recording scenes for television k-drama drama series including the KBS production, Iris as well as filming the tvN drama, Queen and I. Gwanghwamun is also a location for hosting concerts. Beast boy band attracted an audience of 4000 at his guerrilla concert back in July 2012.
