Training US Army soldiers in convoy defense at Fort Leonard Wood's Convoy Live Fire range. Soldiers rehearse reacting to IEDs, engaging targets while mounted, dismounting, establishing a perimeter, engaging targets from fighting positions, and mounting while maintaining security. The exercise begins with static display training. Non-working vehicles are arranged in a mock ambush situation so instructors do not have to talk over the engine noise. Soldiers are trained on how to safely and quickly board and dismount while setting up a 360° security perimeter. Soldiers are also introduced to the concept of leading targets while engaging from a moving vehicle and familiarized with the safety procedures that will be used by the range cadre while the vehicles are in motion. Following static display training is the blank fire exercise. The soldiers mount the vehicles and follow a course through the training area. They are instructed to raise their muzzles so as not to expose friendly personnel and react to roadside IEDs. Advanced trainees (out of basic training) train on reacting to IED casualties and engaging hostile personnel in the IED area. In the ambush area, soldiers engage targets under cover with blank fire to experience the difficulty of keeping a moving target in the M16 sights. Pyrotechnics and sound effects are used to simulate a successful IED attack on the lead vehicle. Soldiers dismount, establish security, and engage hostile personnel under cover as in static training. When the lead vehicle is moved out of the way of the convoy, soldiers mount and move out of the attack area while maintaining security. Next video shows the live fire exercise, where all actions are repeated with real ammunition and reactive targets. Range 39 was conceived, planned, and implemented by personnel from the 80th and 98th Institutional Training Divisions.
