How to Protect yourself from harmful Sunrays

Sunlight is a part of the electromagnetic radiation given away by the Sun consisting of Infrared, Visible, and Ultraviolet light. Moderate Sun exposure may have benefits for health like a healthier immune system, strong bones, but excessive exposure to Sunlight’s UV rays is very harmful which can cause pigmentation, sunburn, aging, wrinkles, and tanning, and in some cases Skin Cancer. Therefore it is important to find the right balance.
There are few precautions one should take before heading out in the Sun.
1. Apply Sunscreen to exposed areas of the body at least  20 minutes before going out  – the SPF factor of Sunscreen should be more than 30, SPF protects from UVB rays, Choose a sunscreen with PA factor denoted by a ‘++’ symbol on the pack, this denotes the protection factor from UVA rays.

2. Apply Sunscreen every 2 hours- Sunscreen needs to be applied every 2 hours to maintain its effect, do carry a bottle /tube of Sunscreen if you are heading out for more than 2 hours.
3. Cover yourself- wear a Hat or a Cap or carry an umbrella, it not only protects from the heat but also the light.
4. Wear wide Rimmed Sunglasses – Sunglasses protect the eyes from bright light, wide-rimmed sunglasses protect the sensitive skin around the eyes from the harmful effects of sun rays.
5. Clothes- wear long-sleeve clothes to protect the skin on your hands, one can also wear long gloves. Light-colored clothes reflect the sunlight whereas dark-colored clothes absorb the sunlight. Clothes made of cotton are comfortable for the body as they not only absorb sweat but also are easy on the skin.
6. Avoid Going out in the sun between 10 AM to 5 PM when the radiation from the Sun is at its peak.
7. Apply Sunscreen even in Cloudy weather – Sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays are present even during cloudy weather or when you are not exposed to direct sunlight so one should not miss the application of Sunscreen in cloudy weather.
8. Protection in High Altitude areas- when you are at a high altitude place such as a hill station the proximity to the sun is more due to altitude so the application of sunscreen and avoiding overexposure is utmost necessary.
9. During Sporting activity- once should keep reapplying Sunscreen frequently during any sporting activity in the Sun; sunscreen should be water-resistant as a coat of sunscreen would be washed by the sweat of water if you are swimming. A broad-spectrum sunscreen is best.
Apart from harmful effects on the skin overexposure to the sun may also lead to Heat Stroke and Heat exhaustion and one must take appropriate precautions while heading out.
