Introduction: 0:00 Different Baits and Active Ingredients: 0:32 What is the Best Ant Bait to Use: 2:17 Where to Apply Ant Bait: 3:05 How to Use Different Ant Baits: 3:43 --- Ant infestations happen often throughout the year, and they can spread quickly if left untreated. In order to get control however, you’ll need time, patience, and the right products. Many ant control plans use ant bait in order to slowly kill off a colony’s population. There are many different baits you can use to treat your ant infestation. Ant baits come in different formulations. These include gels like Ant-Trax, granules like Ficam, and dusts or powders like Surrender. Baits can also come as liquids or in plastic trap containers. Additionally, you’ll need to pay attention to each product’s active ingredient. The active ingredient is what kills or controls the ant. Most baits are made of a small portion of active ingredient while the rest is composed of either carbohydrates, proteins, oils, or a combination of all these together. Look for a product’s active ingredient on the product’s label to learn more about how each product should be used and how it can lead to total elimination. Some baits have advantages over others. Generally, ants fall into one of two categories: sugar-feeding ants or protein-feeding ants. Sugar ants seek out all kinds of sugary foods. This includes honeydew produced by aphids or scales, fruit, or even spilled juice. Protein-feeding ants are known to feed on other insects, meats, greasy foods, bread, and more. Before applying any ant bait, it’s important to determine what species of ant you’re dealing with so you can determine the which bait is best for you. Before you set your ant bait, make sure there are no other food options available. Sweep or vacuum your floors, seal loose foods like cereals in airtight containers, and wipe down surfaces with warm water. Avoid using any type of soap, bleach, or other chemical cleaner as these may act as deterrents and could interfere with the bait’s success. Read and follow the instructions on your product’s label thoroughly. Most bait products should be placed in spots where ant activity has been observed. This can be around drains, directly on ant trails, or wherever you’ve seen ants enter or exit your home. Be sure to place baits in areas that are inaccessible to children or pets.
