Fetal teratomas are tumors found in newborns, often appearing on the neck, chest or tailbone. They can be cystic, solid or a mix of both. http://fetalsurgery.chop.edu

Dr. Adzick and Dr. Flake from the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia explain the various types of teratomas, the challenges each type presents, and the implications for the developing fetus.

There are four types of teratomas that range in complexity based on whether they’re internal or external, including sacrococcygeal teratomas (SCT), cervical teratomas and mediastinal teratomas.

Fetal teratomas can be cystic, solid, or a mix of both. Cystic teratomas are almost like balloons, with a thin outer rim containing one or multiple cysts filled with fluid. A solid teratoma is firm, comprised of spongy or solid tissue that contains blood vessels that run throughout the tumor.

Fetal tumors are often found on the neck, in the chest, or growing off of the tailbone.

A sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is a teratoma that grows from the tailbone. There are four types, characterized by whether the tumor is external (growing outside the baby), inside the baby, or a mix of both.

A cervical teratoma is a tumor that forms in the neck. They can contain all types of tissue, and many are a combination of both cystic and solid tissue. The most common problem cervical teratomas cause is distortion of the airway or compression of the trachea, which makes it difficult for the baby to breathe after delivery. For that reason, babies with cervical teratomas often need to be delivered by an EXIT procedure to establish an airway before the baby is fully delivered.

A mediastinal teratoma refers to a tumor that grows in the midline, in the chest. The mediastinum is the compartment between the lungs that surrounds the heart. The main problem with mediastinal teratomas is that it takes up space in the tiny fetal chest, which can push the heart out of place, compress the lungs and flatten the airway.
