Yazidi New Year draws crowd to Lalish temple

Hey everyone, welcome back to my channel! In today's video, I am excited to take you on a journey to the Lalish Temple in Iraq's northern Kurdistan region. We will be witnessing a unique celebration called 'Red Wednesday' which marks the beginning of the Yazidi New Year. I am thrilled to share this cultural experience with you all, so let's get started!
Members of Iraq’s Yazidi community gathered at the temple of Lalish on Tuesday (April 18), in Iraq’s northern Kurdistan region, to mark the eve of ‘Red Wednesday’, the Yazidi New Year.
Heads of the Lalish office at the temple, Lokman Suleiman, said that the New Year is one of the ancient holidays of the Yazidi religion. It comes on the first Wednesday of eastern April. It is the celebration of the creation of the earth.
Wearing traditional clothes and lighting candles on stones, Yazidis performed ancient rites that also include tapping boiled, coloured eggs.
"Boiling the egg symbolises the creation of the earth and the colours are the colours of nature," Suleiman added.
The Yazidis are an ancient minority who combine Zoroastrian, Christian, Manichean, Jewish and Muslim beliefs. The group was brutally persecuted by Islamic State who viewed the Yazidis as devil worshippers.
Remembering the violence that his community suffered in Sinjar, one of the attendees, Qasem Derwish Yousef, said that now, the community was able to celebrate as before.
“We are celebrating like before, celebrating our holidays and our religious rituals.”
