Alright, although 2018 MVP Mookie Betts is currently out with a fracture, he'll be back in August. But when he returns, will it be as a shortstop, or are the Dodgers looking for another solution? Yes, that's something being considered! It's no secret that, despite Betts' athleticism, he hasn't been particularly great at shortstop this season. As a result, the famous insider Ken Rosenthal reported that the Dodgers are looking to trade for a new shortstop.
Rosenthal said on the Foul Territory show that the Dodgers have an offensive need. The infield is going through a tough time with the injuries to Max Muncy and Mookie Betts. According to the insider, the Dodgers are looking for a shortstop to move Mookie to second base.
The trade market doesn't have a deep pool of shortstops available. Although Bo Bichette is an option, and the Dodgers are in talks, he hasn't been particularly impressive on offense in 2024.
Rowan Kavner from Fox Sports has linked the Rays’ José Caballero to the Dodgers, but those talks haven’t turned into anything serious.
But with the Dodgers wanting to avoid another first-round playoff exit, the team is considering that Betts' best position remains second base.
So, the shortstop position remains a big mystery for the Dodgers. The team had bet their future on Gavin Lux for that spot, but he hasn't been consistent enough to warrant a full-time role. As Rosenthal noted, if Lux were qualified for league leaders, he would have one of the lowest OPS in the majors.
Such has been his performance that the team prefers to field the 35-year-old veteran Miguel Rojas at shortstop instead of him. It doesn’t hurt that Rojas is turning into a sort of lucky charm for the team, with the Dodgers going 23-0 when he gets at least one hit.
This season has been a revelation for Miggy Ro, a comeback he had needed for a long time. But at his age, one can’t expect him to carry on the highly demanding shortstop duties all the time.
As a result, it brings the team back to square one. Could they risk going to the playoffs with Mookie Betts playing out of his best position?
So, Dodgers fans, what do you think about this potential change? Should Mookie Betts continue as a shortstop, or is it better to look for a new signing for the position?
