Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan urged world leaders on Sept. 24 to step up and address the needs of Syrian refugees. Syria has become “a symbol of injustice” Erdoğan said in a speech before the United Nations General Assembly. Holding up a photo of a Syrian refugee boy who was found drowned on a Turkish shore, Erdoğan said the world’s nations have a responsibility to prevent more children from facing the same fate while fleeing their embattled nation of Syria. The Turkish president then went on to outline his own vision for a resolution to the refugee crisis, which he says includes the defeat of ISIS and Kurdish groups that Turkey considers terrorist organizations.
