The Longest Electric Range Yet - Test of the Mercedes GLE 350 de 4Matic
Mercedes claims that with their plug-in hybrid models it's "The best or nothing," and in the case of the impressive new GLE 350 de 4Matic that motto could be tweaked to "The longest or nothing." This high-riding luxury SUV delivers a class-leading electric driving range of up to 100km thanks to its large 31.2 kWh battery pack, allowing drivers to complete most daily commutes without ever firing up the efficient diesel engine.
We had the chance to thoroughly test the impressive electric and overall driving range of the new plug-in GLE on a mix of highway and backroad driving. Despite scorching 36-37 degree Celsius heat with the A/C blasting, the Mercedes managed a real-world electric range of 100km before the diesel motor seamlessly kicked in to directly power the wheels. This was achieved at legal highway speeds between 70-100km/h, proving the serious usable EV range.
The total energy consumption in EV mode was 22.4 kWh/100km, very frugal considering the sheer size and weight of the vehicle. Mercedes doesn't publish usable battery capacity but based on our experience it appears there is around 26 kWh of usable energy in the pack, with the rest kept in reserve to assist the engine when needed. Acceleration is quick at 6.8 seconds to 100km/h thanks to the combined power and torque from the electric motor and 2.0L diesel engine.
It’s easy to drive significant distances electrically because unlike many PHEVs there’s a dedicated EV mode that locks out the diesel motor until around 140km/h. There’s also no charge mode while driving since the large battery renders it ineffective. Impressively, Mercedes has equipped the PHEV GLE with support for 110kW DC fast charging, allowing an 80% charge in just 20 minutes.
The intelligent hybrid system recuperates energy through deceleration and coasting when possible in the D-Auto mode, contributing to the excellent real-world economy. And with a 65L fuel tank, total driving range exceeds 700km with supreme cruising ability once the battery depletes after 100km. We recorded a fuel consumption average of 8.9L/100km with the battery depleted.
At $76,690 in Romania the PHEV GLE 350 de 4Matic commands only a moderate premium over the diesel-powered GLE 400 d, and offers superior refinement with electric driving capability. For customers who still aren't keen on diesel power even in this efficient plug-in hybrid application, a similar GLE 350 e model with comparable electric range is offered with a gasoline engine for a bit less money.
