See what I use for alligator bait, how I hang it, and what I've experienced.

I use 200lb braided line for the leader that is about 18" long with a loop on the end, and my main line is either a fishing pole with 50lb braid or a roll of 550 paracord. The leader is attached to the main line with a 6# swivel snap (~180lbs).
The bait I use is chicken thighs that I pre-rig and then let sit for a day outside. I use a wine cork that is less than 2" in length and it also helps the meat float if you're casting the bait at alligators... I've actually had more interest in not so rotten chick compared to 3-4 day old chicken. I would like to think that the alligators like a bloodier, red meat more so I would like to try liver next time I use bait. I would also like to try a mullet head or part of a tilapia carcass. I have tried baiting alligators now for three years and have had nothing take the bait. They come and look at it, check it out, and just stay there and never eat it. So let me know if I am doing something wrong.
I've never tried casting a bait towards an alligator because I've always been able to treble hook them if they are that close. I've seen Deermeatfordinner do it this way but I've never had beef lung and never really gave it a chance.
