A look WSL2 / Hyper-V performance impact on Virtualbox & VMWare (Windows 10 20H2)

Taking a look at the performance  impact of enabling WSL2 / Hyper-V in Windows 10 on popular virtualization suites such as VMWare workstation and Virtualbox.

Both Virtualbox 6.0 and VMware workstation pro 16 advertise compatibility with Hyper-V and WSL 2.0 but how well does it actually work? In my experience Virtualbox is essentially unusable on 64 bit guests with Hyper-V enabled, VMWare fairs a little better, but the performance is still vastly reduced.

Non scientifically I can also say that it seems to negatively impact the performance of desktop applications, which is somewhat disappointing. Reverting to WSL 1, and disabling the hypervisor seems to be a workaround for now, hopefully they can either improve Hyper-V performance, or design WSL-2 in a way that isn't reliant on the hypervisor. Some of the new and upcoming features are really cool (running linux GUI apps on Windows 10).
