The Renin, Angiotensin, Aldosterone System,
The Renin, Angiotensin, Aldosterone System, or RAAS for short, is a multi-organ system that helps regulate blood pressure and it is one EVERY nurse needs to know!

When you hear the word renin, I want you to associate that with Renal (the medical word for kidney) because that is where renin is produced and released in response to low blood volume. to be specific, renin is released by the juxtaglomerular cells. Renin is the first step in a complex and wonderful process we call the renin angiotensin aldosterone system.
Angiotensinogen is freely floating in the bloodstream and is produced by the liver. When renin and angiotensinogen meet, there is a transformation into angiotensin I. This is only a part of the process, and the angiotensin I is still not active. It must travel to the lungs where another enzymatic reaction occurs that converts angiotensin I into angiotensin II.
It is now active and has a primary function of causing massive vasoconstriction.
But where is the aldosterone? When does that come in?
Aldosterone is a mineralocorticoid and is released in response to low water and sodium volumes and it has a direct function in the reabsorption of these two elements to help increase blood pressure!
