Most of these techniques were used by not just the Italians during the Renaissance, but in Elizabethan England as well as many other countries in Europe. Ruffs were an essential part of historical fashion during the 16th century, and in Renaissance Venice, they took an interesting form in that of the shoulder ruff. But exactly how were they made? What methods were used for starching and forming the traditional figure 8 shapes we know of from Italian Renaissance portraits and prints? Here's how I did it. While making lots of faces. And the results are totally worth it!
