Prevent Elopement/Wandering: Door Guardian in Alzheimer's Dementia Care

Individuals suffering from Alzheimer's Disease
Individuals suffering from Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of dementia often have the tendency to leave the safety of their care environments. Besides being frustrating and scary for caregivers, this "elopement," when it occurs, can lead to injury -- or worse.
I know this quite well. My dad, Jim, became severely cognitively impaired. I cared for him in his own home for four (4) years before he entered a nursing home.
During that time, I made various alterations and other changes to the house in order to better provide Jim with care.
One such intervention was the installation of a Door Guardian lock on the passage from the house into the garage.
This item is one of my absolute favorite access-control and safety devices. I include it on my list of Five (5) Inexpensive Home Modifications.
