The Hindu nationalist leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been sworn as India's new Prime Minister at a ceremony in Delhi.

But the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies control only one third of Parliament. The main opposition, the National Front- Left Front Alliance (NF-LF) has vowed to bring him down.

India's President Sharma has given him until May  31st to prove he can command a majority in parliament.

If he succeeds India will have its first Hindu Nationalist government.

Hindu Nationalist politician Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been sworn in as the new Prime minister of India.

The ceremony took place in front of a large audience at the Presidential mansion in Delhi.

Vajpayee was warmly greeted by party leaders, before he was congratulated by the outgoing premier Narasimha Rao.

The B-J-P won what it called a resounding victory over Rao's Congress party in the parliamentary elections earlier this month.

Vajpayee is the first Prime minister from India's Hindi right wing and his appointment has sent shudders through India's 120 million Muslim population.

However it is unclear how long Vajpayee will remain in office.

With his party controlling only a third of Parliament he needs to win the support of the defeated Congress Party members.

But the main opposition, the National Front-Left Alliance , a grouping of leftists and low caste parties has vowed to bring down any government he forms..

The Front is angry that it was not given the first chance to try to form a government.

Vajpayee's supporters watching the swearing in ceremony at their party headquarters seemed unconcerned that their leader could be in office for just two weeks.

Vajpayee needs the backing of another 77 members to give him a working majority.

Back at his modest Delhi home he was evasive about where he would get the support.

At present Vajpayee only has the declared allegiance of the 8 Akali Dal party members.

If he does not get sufficient backing in time for a confidence vote on May 31, President Sharma will be forced to ask another party to form a government.

But although Vajpayee has said he's confident of winning, he's decided not to move into the official Prime Minister's residence until after the vote.
