This video takes you through some specific ideas about using Zoom to teach online. It focuses mainly on younger learners but a couple of the ideas would work perfectly with adults.

01:28 Using Google Earth
04:46 IWB or PDF of the book you are using
07:40 Students Interaction
09:38 Google Maps
12:42 Thanks for watching

The first idea focuses around getting the students interesting in speaking and I suggest that one possible way is to make use of Google Earth. You could start yourself by talking about a certain monument or place you like and then get the students to do the same. They could prepare for for homework or it would be possible to put the students into break out rooms and get them to present to their class mates. When teaching online we really need to think of ideas that take the pressure off the teacher and get the students working together. This first idea does require a good internet connection.

The second idea I suggested is making use of the IWB software that normally comes with the book. You can also use a PDF of the book too. This is a great way of getting your students to interact in an online lesson. Once they have control, they can then begin to move things, label things and click on different parts of the screen. This can be very powerful.

In the 3rd part, I suggest how we can use the IWB software that is provided by Zoom. This can be useful for creating interactive activities in an online situation. It is possible to actually have multiple students working on the screen at the same time. So if you divide the screen up you can have maybe four students working at the same time. You could give them instructions and then they can follow your instructions and draw or write what you suggest on the screen. You could also change the activity and get the students to give the instructions  and this way you will get them speaking English rather than just listening.  The key to working online is to think of ways to put more focus on the students and get them to engage with the content etc.

I also suggest making use of Google Maps. This is not so internet heavy and again you can take students to specific places and talk about them. This is great for making your online English lessons a bit more engaging.
