Damage from Severe Thunderstorms that passed through Springfield, Massachusetts on the afternoon of 05/04/2010. Winds were strong enough to uproot this tree on Parker Street in the Northeast part of Springfield and the tree was at least 3 1/2 feet in diameter which would  require a wind speed at least 70 mph. The National Weather Service in Taunton had Hampden County under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning from about 3:45 pm et until 5:30 pm et on the afternoon of 05/04/2010. No Tornado Warning was issued. In the eight years I have lived in Mass we have had 1 maybe 2 tornado warnings ever but growing up in Iowa they were part of life. Massachusetts has 3 tornadoes a year tops (some years none) but is known for the notorious Worcester Tornado that was the only known tornado in New England to produce F5 damage in some neighborhoods but was officially rated F4 but it happened before the Fujita Scale was developed in the mid 1970's. Springfield has tornado sirens but they are inoperable because of corruption in city hall has led them to fall into disrepair.
