Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the scenes from Kabul are “absolutely heartbreaking” and National Security Committee has been meeting to finalise operational plans to rescue Afghans.

“Already, 430 Afghan nationals who have worked with Australia are already here in Australia with their families and they have come here since April,” he said.

Mr Morrison said approximately 1,800 Afghans had been brought to Australia over the course of years and more “will be added to this number”.

Mr Morrison said Afghanistan was in a “torrid situation” and Australia’s humanitarian program has the capability to take people from the country even though there are struggles.

“The situation at the airport still remains a very difficult and challenging environment but our defence forces as well as DFAT … are working closely together not just for what needs to be done in the Middle East but what will need to be done back here in Australia,” he said.
