Despite the fact that I sound really timid and breathless at the start... I think this might be my best poetry vid so far. I really like the "notable quote" format as opposed to reading through the entire poem - I think it made for a nicely concise analysis of this really long poem. It kind of works better for exam prep too - usually you're not expected to go through the poem chronologically and talk about every little detail, you're just supposed to pick out important quotes and relate them to the themes of the poem as a whole.

So yeah, let me know if you like this format too. Not that it matters much because I've made most of the rest of the powerpoints already... I think I have 3 left to do from scratch so maybe in a few months this format will be making a comeback?!

Anyway, just in the context of THIS video, I'm actually shocked that I managed to get some pretty deep discussion across about a poem THIS long in just 20 minutes. Hope you like it too!

As I don't read the poem for you in this vid it's TRIPLEY important that you read the text in full before watching the video: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem...

Another reason I like this video is because this poem brings up some reeeally interesting points in a super engaging way. Just pick any stanza and think about it deeply and there's probably some underlying message about wider society or something buried in there. That's why we love Mr Frost, right guys? :D I reckon if you had to write an essay/dissertation on the "found family" trope this would be an AMAZING text to reference. As a critique of capitalism, modernism and patriarchy too it's freaking brilliant. I think Marx would approve, haha.

Also while watching this back I've noticed a lot of parallels with Home Burial - another quality poem of Frostie's. I think I'll upload that analysis next so we can look at them properly side-by-side. If you've never read it just imagine that Mary and Warren already know Silas is dead, they're a LOT more emo and they don't come to an agreement in the end. And of course there's a lot more blatant talk about "masculine" and "feminine" traits and gender roles. I think it'd be really interesting to compare the two.

Big thanks to my references for this analysis:
