Red acne scars are very common and occur as pimples, blackheads, zits or cysts resolve. Red scars can be flat, however in some patients red acne scars can also be indented or atrophic or conversely raised or hypertrophic. Red scar occur due to inflammation and formation of new blood vessels.

My preferred method of treating red scars is a combination of lasers and creams. The laser of choice is the V BEAM laser, as it targets blood vessels within these acne scars. IPL can also be used, however pulse dye lasers such as the V Beam or Excel V are the best methods.
Red scars can be faded by 80% with 3 -4 laser sessions. Laser can also treat lumpy or hypertrophic scarring. Early treatment of red scars can also remodel collagen, reducing further scarring.

Fractional lasers can also help treat red scars that are indented or raised. Lasers such as Fraxel can stimulate collagen, as well as remodel blood vessels. I personally think fractional laser resurfacing is not indicated for FLAT red scars (macular erythema).

The use of sunscreen is vitally important after laser treatment, as this can accelerated the healing process.

Occasionally I prescribe a vitamin A and C serum to accelerate the healing process.

Macular erythema, also known as red acne marks, or post inflammatory dyspigmentation – red acne scars are the simplest scars to treat. My protocol is 3-4 sessions over 3-4 weeks. Bruising may occur – depending on the skin type and how high I push the settings.
