The Orchha Fort complex consists of a huge number of ancient monuments which includes the fort, palaces, temple, as well as other edifices. It is situated in the Orchha town in the Madhya Pradesh state of India. The fort as well as other structures within the complex were constructed by the Bundela Rajputs from the beginning of 16th century by King Rudra Pratap Singh of the Orchha State and other bundela kings followed him.

So it has Raja Mahal or Raja Mandir, Sheesh Mahal, Jahangir Mahal, a temple, gardens and pavilions.

Location: The fort complex is situated in the Nivadi district of Madhya Pradesh in the erstwhile Orchha state. The fort complex is located within an island which was formed by the confluence of the Betwa River as well as Jamni River in Orchha town. Orchha is around 80 km away from Tikamgarh town, which was the known to be district headquarters of Bundela Rajputs. Jhansi town is around 15 km away.

History: The fort was made after Orchha State was declared as capital in 1501 AD by Rudra Pratap Singh (r. 1501–1531), a Bundela Rajput. The palaces as well as the temples within the fort complex were constructed over a long period of time by successive Maharajas of the Orchha State. Out of these, the Raja Mandir or Raja Mahal was constructed by Madhukar Shah who ruled from 1554 to 1591. Jahangir Mahal and Sawan Bhadon Mahal were constructed during Vir Singh Deo's reign (r. 1605–1627).

Raja Mahal: The Raja Mahal (King's Palace), where the kings as well as the queens used to live till it was abandoned in 1783, was constructed in the early 16th century. Its exterior is quite simple and unembellished, the interior chambers of this beautiful palace are very royal in their architectural design, as they are decorated with murals of social and religious themes of gods, mythical animals, as well as people. In the upper floor of the Raja Mahal, there are traces of mirrors in the ceilings as well as the walls. Its windows, arcaded passages, as well as layout plan were designed in such a way that the "sunlight and shadow create areas of different moods and temperatures all through the day". The interior walls of the Mahal have several murals of Lord Vishnu as well as it has several secret passages.

Sheesh Mahal: Sheesh Mahal is made on either side of the Raja Mahal as well as the Jahangir Mahal. This has royal accommodation, which was built for King Udait Singh. It has now been converted into a luxury hotel which has suites on the upper floor. In this Palace there is a large hall with high ceiling, which is known to have the dining hall.

Jahangir Mahal: Jahangir Mahal is a palace which was exclusively built by Bir Singh Deo in 1605 in order to honour the Mughal emperor Jahangir who was called as a guest of the Maharaja for just one night. The palace is constructed in four levels with features of both Muslim as well as Rajput architecture. Its layout looks like a symmetrical square, constructed in the inner courtyard of the fort, it has eight large domes. It has a number of rooms with arcaded openings, projecting platforms as well as windows with beautiful lattice design work.
