Before we answer the question, "What is innovation?" maybe you're wondering just why innovation is so important?
It seems like no matter where you go, what you read, who you do business with, the conversation inevitably turns to the innovation process.
Well, like it or not, we live and work in an innovation-driven world. Today, the only “business as usual” is that there is no business as usual anymore. And while the meaning of innovation is important, the ability to do it is even more so!
It's been said that the New Darwinism in business, is "Innovate or perish.” Simply meaning that if you don't have the willingness and ability to continuously generate innovative business ideas, to rethink and reinvent what you offer to the world, you run the very real risk of drifting into irrelevance. And today, irrelevance is pretty much the same thing as extinction.
And guess what: it's non-negotiable.
Not long ago, many organizations could thrive for decades on one good business idea. Today you need a great idea every year, every season, in some cases, every day. The demands placed on each of us are greater than ever. People want more, they want it for less, and they want it faster.
So you see, today we all have to be masterful innovators.
