For those following each and every last one of my uploads, first of all, thank you, and second, know that I just HAD to post this next after that Sacrifice Girl video.
Use both that video and this one to compare and contrast the nature of how game developers mess around with underwater gameplay and threat of drowning. Some for thrills, others for chills. Sometimes... both.
For Sonic, it's always for chills if you can't get through these well, but you could get some thrills out of this too since Hydrocity's still one of the best and fastest water zones in the entire franchise.

Plus has not updated anything for Hydrocity itself, even though Stardust Speedway now has an outro into this zone. Unfortunately, not even your character(s) falling down the waterfall at the start gets reused if you reload the data for this level or pick it from the Zone Select Screen.
The end for this zone is upgraded, though, even before the Eggman Act 2 boss is beaten. After beating the first half in the original Sonic Mania, you're sent through a narrow tube that sends you upward, and then out from the top into Eggman's washing machine pool pit.
Plus makes this transition a bit more dynamic and faster just in case your character was close to drowning. You still get sent through a narrow tube, but now you come crashing and splashing out the side wall into the pool pit, instead!
Then, after beating Eggman and draining the water from there, the right side of the pit opens up with more water splashing in and soaking your character. After a brief pause, your character then makes his way out of the open tunnel.
Hydrocity originally didn't have an outro into Mirage Saloon, but even with this new outro, it only shows how the heroes leave the zone, but it still doesn't show how Sonic, Tails and even Knuckles manage to group together for their Tornado flight...
