When shooting a day interior over the course of a long day, the natural light will not provide you with the consistent lighting you need for your scene. Therefore, being able to recreate daylight is an extremely important skill that every cinematographer needs to have. Director of Photography Megan Stacey teaches us two ways to recreate cinematic daylight in a studio environment, while also discussing 4 important tips.
You may not always have the ability or resources to manipulate real daylight to fit your scene, so recreating daylight in a studio environment is a common technique in filmmaking. This gives you the ultimate control over your light, allowing you to create stunning cinematography, without having to chase the sun. You can do everything from creating large ambient light sources, to hard lights to mimic the sun. Recreating daylight interiors in a studio will give you the ability to finesse the cinematic depth and visual interest in your films.
The four concepts Megan discusses in this video include quality of light, color of light, window treatments, and direction of light. Megan uses these factors in two different scenes to create stylistic lighting for both a moody, rainy scene and a calm, sunlit scene.
Once you master daylight recreation you will have another tool to create cinematic images. The limitations of your shoot may not always give you the ability to shoot a daylight interior during the day. You'll learn how to achieve absolute control over your image, and create cinematic masterpieces.
