Chickens in the Garden - Using chickens off season to work the garden.
What was old is new again with the whole permaculture craze. In this video you can see just how much work these chickens have done as far as clearing grass and moving dirt in our garden spot- all in about 24 hours. We have this small fenced in garden spot (55' x 30') because deer pose an issue eating the crops during growing season. A week or so ago, our chickens were beginning to be harassed by foxes at night. So- since the summer garden is done (and we aren't going to have a fall or winter garden), we decided to move the chickens into the garden. There they will be fenced in (day and night) and safer- but also... they will clear the garden of all grass, weeds, seeds, bugs, and larvae- all while aerating and fertilizing the soil as they scratch and poop. As the fall and winter goes on, we will add leaves, mulch, aged sawdust. This will give something for the chickens to busy themselves with while they eat their layer feed, scratch, and kitchen scraps. Not only will they be safer, they will clear the garden WHILE turning the entire garden spot into a compost bin. ...and maybe we will get a few eggs too. ;D
