Augite from Tillamook State Forest || Rockhounding Oregon

If you ever find yourself in the Tillamook State Forest west of Portland*, you can do a whole lot worse for yourself than taking a detour to get some prime augite. Just be careful of the logging trucks (if it's a weekday) and you'll have an easy time rockhounding this classic location! Known in a few publications as "the augite locality" because the mineral is so ubiquitous, you can find it easy enough by parking near the Cedar Butte Trailhead and taking a short hike down an old "road."

*Seriously, it's less than an hour and a half from Portland!
