In the 1960s Chevrolet decided that the Corvette just wasn't going to be able to match the mighty performance of the Ford and Carroll Shelby's Cobra sportscar. But, undeterred, it decided it was time for a new challenger.

They turned to Bill Thomas, a man who had made a reputation for making Corvette's better. His design was the Cheetah, a car with a V8 mounted so far back it's basically in the driver's lap, with suspension copied from a Lotus and exhausts ducted through the cockpit. It was a specialised racer, but took some serious skill to tame. Thankfully, Duncan Pittaway is no stranger to untamable beasts, as the man who owns the legendary Fiat S76 "Beast of Turin". He now owns a Cheetah (as well as some other equally brilliant machines. And brought it to the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard in 2021 to have a go at the Timed Shootout. Duncan talked us through his brilliant machine before he attacked the hill.
