From fragrances to plastic food wraps and more, chemicals known as phthalates found everywhere could be causing approx 100k premature deaths in the U.S. each year.

Chemicals known as phthalates are everywhere and research suggests they could be linked to approx 100k premature deaths every year. A study published on Oct 12 in the journal ‘Environmental Pollution’ found that a group of chemicals called phthalates might be responsible
for approx 100k+ deaths per year in Americans aged 55-64.
Dr. Leonardo Trasande is the study’s lead author and director of the NYU Center for the Investigation of Environmental Hazards. He says because of the materials phthalates are used in, and the nature of the chemicals themselves, they’re very easily absorbed by our bodies, which makes them that much more dangerous. Trasande says that when phthalates enter our bodies, the chemicals disrupt our hormones, resulting in inflammation which can spiral into heart disease, stroke, and other illnesses that can eventually lead to premature death. Trasande hopes his study’s findings push regulatory authorities to take steps to restrict phthalate use.
Although it’s nearly impossible to completely avoid phthalates because they’re so ubiquitous and not always easy to recognize on product labels, here are some things you can do now to try to limit your exposure:
1. Limit your exposure to plastic containers. Use glass, ceramic, or metal instead.
2. If you have to use plastic, don’t microwave it. Heating phthalates will cause them to leech into your food.
3. Avoid using artificial fragrances, as phthalates are used to make scents last longer.
