Definition: Sinusitis is the inflammation and infection of the sinus cavities, typically caused by a viral infection like the common cold.

Sinus Locations: We have four pairs of sinuses located in the cheekbones, forehead, between the eyes, and deeper within the skull behind the eyes.

Common Symptoms: Symptoms of sinusitis include facial pain and pressure, particularly in the cheeks, nasal congestion, thick nasal discharge, and tenderness in the face.

Causes: Sinusitis is most commonly caused by a viral infection but can also be triggered by allergies, dental infections, or structural issues like nasal polyps or a deviated septum.

Bacterial Sinusitis: About 30% of sinusitis cases are bacterial, often developing after initial viral symptoms worsen or persist beyond 10 days.

Serious Complications: If untreated, sinusitis can lead to severe complications like meningitis, brain abscesses, or infections spreading to the bones around the sinuses.

Chronic Sinusitis: Chronic sinusitis lasts more than 12 weeks and is usually bacterial, with episodes of exacerbation linked to allergies or colds.

Postnasal Drip: A common symptom where mucus drains down the throat, causing sore throat, cough, and irritation.

Nasal Irrigation: Saline nasal irrigation 2-3 times daily is a crucial home remedy to clear mucus and alleviate sinusitis symptoms.

Decongestants: Oral or nasal decongestants can relieve congestion but should be used for no more than 3 days to avoid rebound effects.

Antibiotic Treatment: Bacterial sinusitis is treated with antibiotics like amoxicillin, particularly if symptoms persist or worsen after 10 days.

Nasal Corticosteroids: Chronic sinusitis may require prolonged use of nasal corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and prevent exacerbations.

Surgery Option: In cases of structural issues or treatment failure, surgery may be considered, with a 70% success rate in improving symptoms.

Fatigue: Sinusitis often causes fatigue due to the body’s prolonged response to infection and inflammation.

Prevention: Managing allergies, avoiding smoking, and practicing good hygiene can help prevent sinusitis from developing or worsening.
