After The Prophet is controversial,
After The Prophet is controversial, no doubt about it.
Sunnis think that it supports Shias, while Shias believe if downplays their faith.
However, what Lesley has done best in her book is put references at the end of the book in such detail that if someone disagrees with her, she has given them a challenge to prove her wrong.
It is almost like she wants someone to prove that what she has written in the book, after thorough research and reading, is not the right history.
After the Prophet however served one great purpose for Islam and the Muslims of the world, it gave the West everything they wanted in one place to at least try and understand the Muslim history and why Iraq, Iran, the Middle East, and everyone else in the Muslim world is fighting over who should have replaced the Prophet (PBUH).
History is always subjective, but Lesley, in her book, has tried to provide multiple accounts of every single event, much like Al Tabari whose readings have inspired her as per her own words, which shaped the history of Islam.
The Shia-Sunni split in Islam is here to stay till the end, but through Lesley's work we can make sense of what Shias feel and also what Sunnis believe.
Her storytelling is immaculate: when she describes what happened at Karbala in detail, even the strongest of the hearts melt.
