When you think entry level models, you often think that it’s the bare minimum of a vehicle with corners that have been cut. That’s not the case in the 2021 Mercedes A220 4MATIC that we drove as we saw some common things from the models higher in their lineup. Even though our loaner had some options on it, you can still consider it entry level.

Starting with the outside, you can see the large Mercedes logo that’s part of the current lineup. The LED headlights share the common eyebrow design from other models. Where you do start to see some savings being done by Mercedes is in the plastic materials in the grille. They do look cheaper and you’d have to option it out with the AMG Line option to include the better looking chrome diamond block grille.

When it came to the wheels, our A220 had the optional 18” 5-spoke wheel design. You could honestly skip the $700 option as I personally think the standard 17” 10-spoke design actually looks better. If you want something flashy, you can always go aftermarket.

Under the hood you can find a 2.0L inline 4-cylinder turbocharged engine. It won’t break any speed records when it outputs 188 horsepower, but it will get you from point a to point b. If you’re wanting to have some AMG enhancement done to the engine, you’ll need to pay about $10k more to bump up to the AMG A35. Do i think it’s worth it? if you’re looking for fun then yes because when we had that engine in the GLA35, it was incredible.

Getting inside is where this Mercedes A220 really shines. The interior is virtually identical to the other Mercedes vehicles including some in the $100k range! That lends to the fit and finish to be top notch without comprising to keep costs down. Our Mercedes A220 was equipped with the premium screen options which we think are a must. The big screens allow clear viewing of your Apple CarPlay items as well as being able to customize the gauge cluster. One thing I’d recommend upgrading are the seats from the heated options this had, to the heated and vented options because you can feel the Texas heat on your back.

Overall I’m impressed that Mercedes can deliver an entry level vehicle but still have the quality of their significantly more expensive models.
