The Welsh Language is a Celtic Language of the British branch, and when compared to the vocabulary of major European Languages like English, French and German, one thing that stands out of that the vocabulary is often very different. And not just for core words as you would expect, but for prestige words, and high culture references from earlier ages. There is a good reason for this, rooted in Wales' geography on the edge of Europe, far from the earlier centres of power. And in this video we take a look at some of these words to get a glimpse into how being removed from the centres of power in certain historical time periods created an ability within this culture to create words of prestige from within its own culture without needing references from others to create aspirational values within Welsh.
