Locators are an important aspect of Cubase workflow. They are used for recording and sections, as well as setting the range to export for final mix-down. So it is helpful to be able to set the locators quickly.

Cubase offers numerous ways to set the left and right locator. These different methods can be grouped into 3 categories:

From the Ruler
With keyboard 'P'
From the project cursor
Let's talk about each of them.

Ruler

The ruler comprises two areas; the bottom part is used for setting the project cursor.  The top part is for the locator.  On this top part, there will be two triangles, one for the left locator and one for the right locator.  You can click on either triangle and drag them left or right to change their position.  Alternatively, you can move your mouse to the position where you want the locator to be, then Ctrl-Click  on PC (Cmd-Click on Mac) to set the left locator, and Alt-Click for the right locator.

If you place your mouse between the left and right locator on the upper ruler, the mouse icon changes to a hand.  Just click and drag to move the entire locator range left or right.

Keyboard 'P'

Typing 'P' will set a range for the left and right locators.  The specific range can be set a number of ways.  For example, just clicking on a clip will select that clip.  Now type 'P', and the locators will now match with the ends of the clip.

You can also set the range by using Range tool on the toolbox (in the Project window, right click to see the toolbox).

To surround the entire project with the locator, perform a 'select all' action.  You can do this by going to the menu: Edit - Select - All, or just type Ctrl-A (or Cmd-A).

Project Cursor

On the transport panel, the Left Locator button is usually used to move the project cursor to the left locator position.  But you can do the opposite of that: just hold down the Alt key and click on the left locator button.  The left locator will now change to match the project cursor position.  The same goes for the right locator button.  Another way to do the same action is in the menu: Transport - Locators.  And yet another way is with the numeric keypad: type Ctrl - Num-1 or Ctrl-Num-2 to set the left or right locators to the project cursor position.
