In popular culture, the Middle Ages are often portrayed either as a dark age of ignorance and religious obscurantism, or romanticized through images of knights, princesses and castles. But what was the real day-to-day life of people in those times like?
In this video we will discard extreme stereotypes and objectively examine the life, manners and way of life in the Middle Ages - from V to XV centuries. We will find out how typical rural settlements looked like, what peasants did, what role cities and monasteries played. We will understand how medieval society was closed, what social classes were formed, how Christianity developed.
Relying on historical sources, debunk popular myths: were people so ignorant then, did they believe in a flat Earth, was the Middle Ages only a "dark time" before the Renaissance. We will find out the origin of the term "Middle Ages" itself and the different views on this period - from the Renaissance and Reformation to Romanticism and modernity.
