You can get it from food, supplements, or sunshine. “Vitamin D works as a hormone and as a vitamin. Most people think of it as a sunshine vitamin and that’s because we are able to take the ultraviolet light from the sun and process vitamin D through our skin,” explained Becky Smith, an oncology dietitian with Lee Health.

Vitamin D can be absorbed through milk, fortified cereals, egg yolks, and fatty fish like salmon, tuna, swordfish, and maceral. “We are finding that it may help decrease inflammation in the gut and it also helps with our immune system and fighting off germs, bacteria, and viruses,” she said.

While vitamin D is known for protecting bones and teeth, it also helps the body absorb calcium. “If a patient is deficient they are going to have symptoms like muscle aches, fatigue, and pain,” said Smith.

Taking a supplement, choosing healthy foods, and being outside for 15-20 minutes a few times a week can help keep you from becoming vitamin D deficient.
