जब महाभारत युद्ध के दौरान अर्जुन पुत्र अभिमन्यु ने आचार्य द्रोण के बनाए हुए चक्रव्यूह में प्रवेश किया तब पांडव भी उसके पीछे-पीछे प्रवेश करने के लिए दौड़े।
ऐसा इसलिए क्योंकि अभिमन्यु को चक्रव्यूह में प्रवेश करना तो आता था लेकिन उसे भेदना नहीं। इसी कारण अभिमन्यू की मृत्यू हो गई |
जयद्रथ ने पांडव सेना का चक्रव्यूह मे जाने का रस्ता रोक लिया था |
इसी कारण से अर्जुन ने जयद्रथ को अभिमन्यु के वध का मुख्य कारण मानते हुए उसके वध की प्रतिज्ञा ली। प्रतिज्ञा के अनुसार या तो सूर्य ढलने से पहले अर्जुन उसका वध कर देंगे या फिर वो अग्नि में प्रवेश कर आत्मदाह करेंगे।
