I came to Penang on 3 separate visits and got to see most of the important places on the entire Island. Thus, it was time for me to provide you my Top 10 list of the best places that have to be on your itinery when you are planning you next visit. Penang has very well preserved much of its history; it can be seen as what Singapore used to be in 1960. The entire old city of Georgetown has been granted world heritage status by UNESCO, which ensures its preservation for the future. Penang has many beautiful museums, beaches, temples, mosques and churches that are worth to be visited. In addition, Penang is a real paradise for foodie travelers. Its local cuisine ranks among the best in the world. All in all, Penang provides you quite a good mix between sightseeing and chillout time.
Very nice to visit is the Goddess of Mercy temple with its many chinese lanterns. You will be meeting many locals who come here for prayers. Allover Penang, there are plenty of chinese temples, this has much to do with the chinese Malaysians forming the majority over there. A bit outside of Georgetown would be the Shamrock beach with its unique rocks. It's a very quiet spot that can be easily enjoyed alone. 15 minutes by walk would be the floating mosque, a major islamic place of worship on Penang island. It nicely blends into the local fishing village. The snake temple is another highlight of Penang. It's a very unique chinese temple that hosts plenty of snakes. They are all harmless! The Burmese Buddhist temple is a hidden gem of Penang. It shows the diversity among its local Buddhist community but also marks a unique piece of heritage. Go up to the pagoda and enjoy a beautiful vista over the temple complex! Just on the other side of the street would be the Thai buddhist temple, which charms with its glittering dragons. The Batu Ferringhi Beach is one of Penang's most beautiful beaches. Its great to visit during any time of the day; best however are early morning and late afternoon. The many clan jetties (UNESCO World Heritage) are very interesting floating settlements of the local chinese people. There you can shop at boutiques or enjoy the local delicassies. Furthermore, each jetty has a beautiful view over the local village. Visit all of them! The blue mansion is one of the major pieces of Heritage in Penang. It's a museum, which used to once serve as the embassy of the chinese empire. It's a hotel and has even been featured in "Crazy Rich Asian" Hollywood movie! Make sure to book your tour to get access to the Blue Mansion. The Peranakan Mansion (Green Mansion) is a museum at where you can learn about the rich lifestyle and culture of the Peranakans. The Peranakans are the offspring of Chinese traders and local Malays/Natives. Their culture is a beautiful blend of chinese and malay/aslian; religionwise they follow the Chinese. Armenian street is the touristy centre of Georgetown. Every weekend up from 4pm there is a street market, which is very enjoyable! Make sure to visit Penang during the 7th and 8th day after chinese new year. There will be many celebrations including dragon and lion dance as well as other cultural performances! The very highlight is the Kek Lok Si Temple dedicated to the Goddess of mercy. It's the largest chinese buddhist temple in Southeast Asia. Visit it during chinese new year to see the many lanterns.

A few useful tips for people who only stay 2-3 days in Penang:
Places like the national park and Penang Hill require quite some time to visit and should rather be skipped for short visits. However, if you stay longer, it is a great idea to include them. Traveling in Penang was for me the most convenient using Grab Taxi, as it was cheap and highly efficient.
